Kaimuki graduate elected to Santa Ana JC Hall of Fame

Sylvia "Dolly" Ka'awa (Kaimuki '75) was named to the inaugural Santa Ana (Calif.) Junior College Hall of Fame in September.

Ka'awa, younger sister of local entertainer Mike Ka'awa, played volleyball in 1976-77 for Santa Ana, where she helped lead the team to a 94-0 record.

She was one of 12 nominated to the Hall of Fame and the only female. More than 200 were nominated.

"I was shocked out of all those people," she said. "What an honor. It was great. It was really cool."



Men's Soccer

SMU sophomore forward Duke Hashimoto (Iolani '02 of Kapolei) was named to the 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-America District VI University Division Men's Soccer Team.

• Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) senior Kurt Kagawa (Mililani) scored a goal in the final match of his career in a 4-1 win over Whitman (Walla Walla, Wash.) Saturday.

Kagawa has started all 18 matches for the Pirates this season. He has four goals and six assists.

Freshman Brett Kagawa (Mililani) also plays for Whitworth.



Women's Soccer

Idaho State freshman Jennifer Loo (Mililani '03) scored a first-half goal as the Bengals beat Montana, 1-0, Sunday in the Big Sky Conference Championship game to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.

It was Idaho State's third consecutive Big Sky championship.

Loo was named to the All-Tournament Team and earned conference honorable mention.

• Pacific freshman Brooke Hayashi (Moanalua of 'Aiea) scored both goals in a 2-1 win over George Fox, giving Pacific a school-record 11 wins.

Sophomore Karley Peterson (Leilehua of Wahiawa) assisted on both goals.



Wrestling

Dana College (Blair, Neb.) freshman Shawn Tsutsumi (Castle '03 of Kane'ohe) defeated Steven Sturgis by major decision (12-5) in the 125-pound weight class at the Black/Red Classic on Nov. 3.

Tsutumi's older brother, Brian (Castle '01), also wrestles for Dana College.

• Pacific freshman Aaron Fernandez (Kamehameha '03 of Lana'i City) won by major decision at 133 pounds in a dual meet against No. 17 Central Washington Friday night.



Swimming

Pacific freshman Eryn Tengan (Baldwin '03 of Wailuku) had two second-place finishes in a dual meet again Pacific Lutheran Saturday.

Her 200-yard individual medley time of 2 minutes, 26.40 seconds was a school record. She finished the 100 freestyle in 1:00.81.

She also placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:08.68) in a dual meet against Whitworth Saturday afternoon.



Field Hockey

Denison (Granville, Ohio) senior Courtney Cordeiro (St. Andrew's of Honolulu) started 16 of 19 games, scoring three goals. Denison finished 10-9, and lost in the North Coast Athletic Conference semifinals.
