Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Pacific All-American Mikael Maatta beat Lesley Joseph, 6-1, 7-6 (5), yesterday as play began in the main draw of the Honolulu Futures Tennis Tournament.

Maatta is a senior from Lidkoping, Sweden.

Top-seeded Peter Clarke, who is ranked No. 336 in the world, also advanced after a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Keith From.

Among the other top seeds advancing were No. 4 Doug Bohaboy, No. 7 Michael Ryerstedt and No. 8 Kean Feeder.

The tournament drew 32 players from around the world vying for $15,000 in prize money and a chance to earn points to move into the higher ranks of the men's pro tour.

Today's matches will be held at Ala Moana Beach Park starting at 10 a.m.

SAILING

• Lewis in fourth: After six races, Hawai'i's Andrew Lewis and John Myrdal — a 2000 Olympian — are among the top seven in the Laser Olympic Trials, taking place at Houston Yacht Club.

The trials take a break today and finish Sunday with the winners of each division representing the United States at the Olympics next August in Athens. There are 14 races scheduled.

Lewis, from Honolulu, is fourth with 27 points. The leader is Florida's Mark Mendelblatt, with 10. Myrdal, from Kailua, is seventh with 33 points. He won the second race. Lewis has two runner-up finishes. Competitors get a point for every place with the low total winning.

Marc Jacobi, born and raised in Honolulu and now living in Connecticut, is in 17th place with 83 points. There are 32 boats.

In the men's 470 division, Waipahu's Martin Sterling and Kailua's Sean Doyle are eighth among nine boats. In women's 470, former University of Hawai'i All-American Molly O'Bryan and her crew, Annelise Moore, are last among seven boats.

Maui's Ceci Cleary is also last among seven boats in the Mistral (windsurfing) Division. Those trials are taking place at Jensen Beach, Fla. California's Lanee Beashel has won all eight races.

SURFING

• Longboard postponed: The third round of the Oxbow World Longboard Championships surfing contest was postponed yesterday because of insufficient conditions at Manu Bay, Raglan, New Zealand.

Hawai'i surfers Bonga Perkins, Duane DeSoto and Kekoa Uemura remain in the competition.

At least two more days are required to complete the entire contest.
