Highway arrest follows robbery

A gun and an undisclosed amount of cash were found in a car involved in a Kalihi bank robbery yesterday, said police Capt. Alan Arita of the Criminal Investigation Division.

Police arrested a 40-year-old man and his father, 62, who were in the car when it was stopped on Likelike Highway at 10:38 a.m. The son was held on suspicion of robbing Hawaii National Bank's bank at Dillingham Plaza.

A gun was used in the holdup, police said. A witness provided police with a description and license plate of the getaway car, leading to the arrests.

The older man, who was driving, was released last night pending further investigation.

His son, however, faces federal bank-robbery charges. According to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, the suspect was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree robbery in 1983. Federal authorities said he is unemployed.

Bank robbers can be imprisoned up to 20 years and fined up to $250,000.

Moped driver critically injured

A 20-year-old man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with critical head injuries yesterday after crashing his moped into a parked van on Nanakuli Avenue near Lepeka Avenue.

The accident occurred at 5:43 a.m. Police said the man was not wearing a helmet.

School receives $1,500 in books

The Rotary Club of Downtown Honolulu, which has adopted Central Middle School, presented students in the English as a Second Language program with $1,500 worth of new textbooks yesterday.

The books were purchased through a grant from Rotary International.

The club also is supporting the school by judging its science fair, building a new circulation desk in the library, hosting essay contests and helping with campus beautification.
