Top storytellers to visit libraries

Top storytellers will perform at public libraries on four islands this month in the 2003 Talespinner's Festival of the Pacific.

Hawaiian storyteller Nyla Ching-Fujii, bluesman-balladeer Jeffry Stephen Babb, Japanese-American storyteller Dann Seki and African-American master storyteller Baba Jamal Koram will be featured at the events.

The events are scheduled for:

  • 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Waimea Public Library on Kaua'i.
  • 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kahului Public Library on Maui.
  • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library on the Big Island.
  • 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Hawai'i State Library on O'ahu.


Waldorf School to hold fair Saturday

The Honolulu Waldorf School will hold a fair Saturday for preschool and elementary school children and their families.

The fair will have old-fashioned amusements, a petting zoo, pony rides, crafts and food with an international flavor.

The fair is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission will be free.

A free shuttle will be offered from Niu Valley Shopping Center to the school.


Games to be topic of workshop

The Bishop Museum will hold a day-long teacher workshop Saturday on 15 Makahiki games.

The workshop, conducted by Pa Ku'i a Lua, will discuss the proper techniques for spear sliding, dart sliding, spear throwing, rolling stone disks, fencing, wrestling and other games.

The workshop is $20 and is limited to 50 people. Call 848-4162 to register.


State Department official to speak

Patricia Harrison, an education official with the U.S. State Department, will speak to 300 elementary school students today in advance of Hawai'i International Education Week at the East-West Center.

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, students from eight public and private schools will participate in an opening ceremony and workshops on how people around the world give thanks.

Other events are planned for next week, which Gov. Linda Lingle has declared international education week in Hawai'i.
