KCC student wins $1,000

The Coca-Cola Foundation has given Kapi'olani Community College student Michael Hewitt a $1,000 scholarship.

Hewitt is working toward degrees in paralegal and information technology systems. He tutors international students in English and has done volunteer work for the American Cancer Society, Hawai'i Institute for Marine Biology, Bishop Museum and Hawaiian cultural and research sites.


Adult Friends chooses leader

Arnold Baptiste Jr. has been elected to a two-year term as president of Adult Friends for Youth. Baptiste is president of the Hawaii Management Alliance Association.

Other officers are vice president Chuck Heitzman, treasurer Bill Spellman and secretary Jean Palm McIntosh.


AUW awarded $28,980

The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has given $28,980 to Aloha United Way for programs that help the elderly, the homeless and low-income youths at risk.

"The Weinberg Foundation's commitment to helping the needy in Hawai'i is exceptional," AUW president Irving Lauber said. "Its continued support of Aloha United Way helps us maintain the safety net of essential programs and services that protect the most vulnerable people in our community."


Read Aloud given $10,000

The Hawaii Community Foundation has given $10,000 to Read Aloud America programs in Hawai'i. Since it began in 1999, the program has served more than 62,000 people in 32 programs in Hawai'i public schools.


Money given for school initiative

The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has awarded the Hawaii Business Roundtable $125,000 to develop and implement a school improvement initiative.

The money will support the Hawai'i program of Just For The Kids, a Texas-based nonprofit organization that uses a system that makes data on school performance and student achievement accessible to educators, parents and the general public in a user-friendly manner.


UH foundation fills position

Kathryn Nelson has been named the University of Hawai'i Foundation's new associate vice president for major gifts.

Nelson will help develop fund development strategies for campaigns and special projects. She most recently served as executive director of development for the Kapi'olani Health Foundation.
