Kealakehe shooting guard Saundra Cariaga has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team next fall.

Cariaga, who is 5 feet 9 and from Kamuela on the Big Island, averaged 13.6 points and 5.2 rebounds last season, helping the Waveriders reach the state tournament for the first time. She was named a Big Island Interscholastic Federation first-team all-star and an Advertiser All-State honorable mention.

"Saundra is a great athlete with a very good jump shot and excellent defensive speed and quickness," said UH coach Vince Goo.

Cariaga, who also participated in volleyball, track and soccer, was also recruited by Oregon State, Boise State, San Jose State, Washington State and San Diego State.

SURFING

Triple Crown postponed: The opening day of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing was postponed yesterday because of insufficient surf at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.

The first contests in the Triple Crown — the Vans Hawaiian Pro for men and the Roxy Pro for women — will probably remain on hold for the next few days because there are no significant swells headed to O'ahu's North Shore.

For daily status of the contests, call 596-7873.

Longboards postponed, too: The Oxbow World Longboard Championships was postponed for the third consecutive day yesterday because of poor conditions at Manu Bay, Raglan, New Zealand.

Hawai'i's Duane DeSoto, Bonga Perkins and Kekoa Uemura remain in contention.

Contest officials have until Sunday to run two more days of competition. The contest will determine the world longboard surfing champion for 2003.

GOLF

UH women finish 11th: The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot a final-round 314 to finish at 934 in 11th place at the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown in Henderson, Nev.

UH's Sara Odelius shot 73—223 to finish 17th, 10 strokes behind winner Katrina Leckovic of New Mexico.

New Mexico (869) won the 15-team event by 18 strokes over Tennessee.

Cotner tied for 11th: Keoke Cotner, a 1989 Kamehameha Schools graduate, shot a first-round 2-under-par 70 yesterday in the second stage of a PGA Tour qualifying tournament at McKinney, Texas.

Cotner is in an eight-way tie for 11th place in the 78-player field that is competing at the Stonebridge Ranch course.

Kevin Warrick, who attended Leilehua High, shot 75 and was in an eight-way tie for 56th.

TENNIS

Seeds advance: Second-seeded Lamine Ouahab defeated Alex Kuznetsov, 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-3, yesterday in a first-round match of the $15,000 Honolulu Futures Tennis Tournament at the Ala Moana Beach Park courts.

Third seed Rajeev Ram, fifth seed Paul Logtens and Stephen Amritraj, nephew of former tennis great Vijay Amritraj, also advanced.

Local favorites Malino Oda and Dennis Lajola lost their first-round doubles match to Slovakian qualifiers Blaz Jurjec and Gregor Krusic, 6-3, 6-3.

Play continues today at Ala Moana, starting at 10 a.m.
