Bankruptcy filings drop

Advertiser Staff

The pace of personal bankruptcy filings in Hawai'i fell 16.6 percent during the 12 months ended Sept. 30, in contrast to a record-setting 7.8 percent rise nationwide, data released this morning shows.

Personal bankruptcies statewide dropped to 3,908 versus 4,684 for the same year-ago period. At the same time personal bankruptcy filings nationally jumped to 1,625,813 from 1,508,578 during the same period a year earlier, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

The upward trend at the national level had been expected to continue despite signs of recovery in the economy. The rate of bankruptcies generally lags other economic indicators.
