United to hire on Maui, Kaua'i

Bankrupt United Airlines has gone on a Hawai'i hiring binge to fill 80 positions on O'ahu, Maui and Kaua'i in another sign of confidence in the improving visitor traffic to the Islands.

United has filled all 60 openings at its Honolulu reservation center but still needs to fill nine of 18 Maui openings and two on Kaua'i, spokesman Steve Roth said.

United officials are looking for customer service and ticket counter employees on Maui and two Kaua'i customer service representatives.

The new employees will join approximately 1,500 United workers throughout the Islands, from reservationists to customer service to salespeople, Roth said. About 600 United employees work in the Honolulu reservation center, where employees speak more than 20 different languages.

United expects to hire even more people in Hawai'i in the coming months, Roth said, although he declined to specify the positions.

The rush of new workers comes less than a year after United closed the last of its seven Hawai'i ticket offices in January and shut down reservation centers around the country. United's hiring also comes as Cheap Tickets, a travel sales company with roots in Hawai'i later bought by New York-based Cendant Corp., announced this week it was closing its call center operation in the Islands.

United flies more than 20 Hawai'i trips to the Mainland every day and makes daily flights to Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, and decided to keep its Honolulu reservation center running.

"Honolulu was one of the critical ones that stayed open," Roth said. "Hawai'i continues to be a hugely important market for United. Business continues to be strong, and Honolulu is one of our most important reservation centers."
