As the curtain rises in Honolulu: 6 premieres

By Debra Yuen
TGIF Editor

Another week, another round of stage offerings. Except for "Oliver!," the following are geared for mature audiences.

'Apartment 3A'

Clara Chorley is Annie and Jared Jeffries is Elliot in "Apartment 3A," Manoa Valley Theatre's latest production.

Gregory Yamamoto • The Honolulu Advertiser

This production by Manoa Valley Theatre comes from actor Jeff Daniels, who's been seen in movies that range from "Terms of Endearment" and "The Purple Rose of Cairo" to "Dumb and Dumber" and "Gods and Generals." He's a playwright, too, and "Apartment 3A," his sixth play, is a sexy romantic comedy.

It's the story of a public-TV fund-raiser, Annie, who, recovering from a failed relationship, is looking for a new start.

Bill Ogilvie directs a cast of MVT newcomers: Clara Chorley, Marc Munasque, Gene DeFrancis, Jared Jeffries and Bob McGregor.

From the team that brought you the provocatively titled and themed "Hysterical: A Short History of the Vibrator" comes another adult-themed farce based — would you believe it? — on a true story.

Written by Hilary Hadley Wright, an M.F.A. candidate in playwriting, and directed by Jennifer Goodlander, "Masked" takes off on the story of Charles Genevieve d'Eon de Beaumont, an 18th-century French diplomat/soldier/spy who became a lady of leisure. Yes, you read that right! It's a gender-bending night at the theater. Opening night is themed Drag Night, although cross-dressing is not required to attend. Also, a post-show rap follows the performance on Nov. 21.

  • When: Premieres at 8 p.m. Wednesday; repeats at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21-22, 2 p.m. Nov. 23.
