Meals program gets $4,080

Hawai'i Meals on Wheels has received $4,080 from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. The money will be used to provide hot meals to needy homebound elderly people. Volunteers deliver more than 200 meals each day on 27 delivery routes all over the island.

People interested in receiving meals or volunteering may call 988-6747.


Money from run helps schools

Thousands of runners recently turned out for the Niketown 5-kilometer and Kids Run in Waikiki. The annual event raised $79,000 for O'ahu's public and private schools to support athletic programs and refurbish play equipment.

Here are the top participating schools and the amount of money they raised:

  • Ma'ema'e Elementary School, $6,495.
  • Holy Trinity School, $2,915.
  • Hongwanji Mission School, $2,470.
  • University Lab School, $2,080.
  • Moanalua Middle School, $2,045.
  • Kaimuki Middle School, $1,960.
  • Holy Family Catholic Academy, $1,875.
  • Sacred Hearts Academy, $1,620.
  • St. Andrew's Priory, $1,470.
  • Iolani School , 1,455.
  • Wilson Elementary School, $1,395.
  • Wai'alae Elementary School, $1,405.
  • Trinity Lutheran Church & School, $1,360.
  • Manoa Elementary School, $1,355.
  • Mililani Middle School, $1,195.
  • Niu Valley Middle School, $1,180.

This year's event set a record of about 5,000 participants.


Agency given two grants

Mental Health Kokua has received $53,000 by the McInerny Foundation. The money will go toward the property purchases for expansion of residential services in East Hawai'i and on Maui.

The Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation provided $7,500 to the agency to furnish a new transitional housing facility on Maui.

The money will be used to enable Mental Health Kokua to continue to provide a range of community-based mental health services statewide.
