Mauna Ala Burgess, 15, shows off a 15-inch trout the Wai'anae resident caught while fly fishing with his uncle, Ken Yabusaki. The pair were fishing at Caples Lake near Kirkwood, Calif. It didn't take long for Burgess — who was fishing for the first time — to haul in a trout. "He caught on quickly to the techniques of fly fishing and needed no assistance when he landed and released his first fish," says Yabusaki, who lives in Kane'ohe. Even though the two went fishing in June, it was still a bit chilly for Burgess' liking. "Being on a high mountain lake, wading rivers and being with nature was great and the water was so cold," he said.
