Hawai'i surfers ousted from World Longboard

All three remaining Hawai'i surfers were eliminated from contention in the Oxbow World Longboard Championships yesterday.

The third round, fourth round and quarterfinals were completed yesterday in 4- to 5-foot waves at Manu Bay, Raglan, New Zealand.

Hale'iwa's Bonga Perkins dominated his heats in the third and fourth rounds, but then was upset by South Africa's Mathew Moir in the quarterfinals. Moir caught two high-scoring waves in the final seven minutes of the heat to edge Perkins, 17.5-16.5.

Perkins entered the contest ranked No. 2 on the World Longboard Tour.

Duane DeSoto of Makaha was also eliminated in the quarterfinals. Joel Tudor of California beat DeSoto, 17.75-14.75.

Kekoa Uemura of Honolulu was eliminated in the third round by Brazil's Jaime Viudes, 13.25-12.75.

Perkins and DeSoto each received $1,400; Uemura received $800.

The semifinals and final have yet to be completed. Moir, Tudor, Colin McPhillips of California and Beau Young of Australia are the only competitors remaining.



GOLF

• Cotner tied for 15th: Keoki Cotner, a 1989 Kamehameha Schools graduate, was tied for 15th after two rounds in the second stage of a PGA Tour qualifying tournament at McKinney, Texas.

Cotner shot a 1-over 73 and is at 143 at the Stonebridge Ranch Golf Club. Kevin Warrick, who attended Leilehua High, is tied for 48th at 73—148.

In another qualifying tournament at Beaumont, Calif., Punahou graduate Jim Seki opened with a 3-under-par 69 and was tied for 18th.



FOOTBALL

• Pro Bowl tickets on sale: Tickets for the 2004 Pro Bowl go on sale today at 9 a.m. at several locations, according to the NFL.

Fans can purchase tickets at all Ticketmaster outlets, including select Foodland and Sack 'N Save stores, the Blaisdell Arena and Aloha Stadium. Tickets will also be sold by phone (877) 750-4400 or online at ticketmaster.com.

The 2004 Pro Bowl will be played on Feb. 8, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.



TENNIS

• Second seed advances: Second-seeded Lamine Ouahab defeated Scott Lipsky, 6-2, 6-2, yesterday at the $15,000 Honolulu Futures Tennis Tournament at Ala Moana Beach Park courts.

Ouahab and Todd Widom were the only players to advance to the round of 16 before rain postponed play.

Competition resumes today at 9 a.m. at Ala Moana.

Matches move to Diamond Head Tennis Center for the weekend finish.
