Prep champ leads State Open golf

Amateur Troy Higashiyama of 'Aiea shot a 1-under-par 71 to take the lead after the first round of the Prince Resorts Hawai'i State Open at Hapuna Golf Course on the Big Island yesterday.

Higashiyama, who won the state high school championship in May as a senior at Mid-Pacific Institute, led pros Brady Yokooji and Kirk Nelson by a stroke.

PGA Champions Tour member Dave Eichelberger shot a 78.

Amateur Kirk Smith and pro Larry Stubblefield shot 72s to lead the senior division by a stroke over Dan Nishimoto. Pro Julie Miyagi and amateur Amanda Wilson shot 76s to lead the women's division.

The tournament continues today.

MORE GOLF

Cotner tied for 13th: Keoke Cotner, a 1989 Kamehameha Schools graduate, is tied for 13th heading into the final round of a second stage of a PGA Tour qualifying tournament at McKinney, Texas.

Cotner shot a third-round 1-over 73 for a 216 total. Han Lee, of Fullerton, Calif., leads at 70—208.

Kevin Warrick, who attended Leilehua High School, shot 85—233, and is in 68th place.

The top 20 finishers advance to the final 108-hole qualifying Dec. 3-8 at the Orange County National in Winter Garden, Fla.

At a qualifying tournament in Beaumont, Calif., Punahou graduate Jim Seki shot a second-round 2-under 70 and is tied for 13th at 139.

SURFING

Young wins longboard: Australia's Beau Young defeated California's Joel Tudor to win the Oxbow World Longboard Championships yesterday in 4- to 5-foot waves at Manu Bay, Raglan, New Zealand.

The victory gave Young enough points to clinch his second world longboard championship. He also won the title in 2000.

Bonga Perkins of Hale'iwa was eliminated in the quarterfinals, but finished No. 3 in the final World Longboard Tour ratings. Young was first with 2,455 points, followed by Tudor (2,400) and Perkins (1,923).

Competitors used surfboards at least nine feet long.

TENNIS

Semifinals set: The top three seeds advanced to today's semifinals of the USTA Honolulu Futures Men's Professional Tennis Tournament yesterday at Ala Moana Beach Park courts.

In the quarterfinals yesterday, top seed Peter Clarke defeated Todd Widom, 6-3, 7-6 (2); No. 2 Lamine Ouahab defeated Paul Logtens, 7-5, 6-4; No. 3 Rajeev Ram defeated Kean Feeder, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and No. 6 Todd Widom defeated Matthew Hanlin, 6-1, 6-2.

Clarke plays Widom and Ram faces Quahab in the semifinals at Diamond Head Tennis Center.
