Park may raise fees for cabins
HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui Haleakala National Park wants to increase the fees charged for use of its three wilderness cabins inside the crater.
The proposed fees, which would take effect in the spring, are $55 per night for groups of one to six people, and $110 per night for groups of seven to 12 people.
The last fee increase was in 1995, when a two-tier fee structure of $40 and $80 was implemented.
Use of reserve to be discussed
KAHULUI, Maui The impact of commercial uses at the 'Ahihi-Kina'u Natural Area Reserve in Makena will be discussed during a public meeting of the State Natural Area Reserve Commission from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Maui Beach Hotel.
The area is easily reached by public road and is popular with snorkelers and kayak tours.
There are concerns that commercial activity is affecting dolphins and other marine life found there.

Man, 78, dies in H-1 incident
A 78-year-old man died yesterday morning when he slumped over the steering wheel of his car just before the vehicle hit a concrete median.
Police said the man was westbound in the left lane of H-1 and was nearing University Avenue when, according to witnesses, he slumped over the wheel of his tan, 2000 Odyssey.
The van veered across the left lane and struck the concrete median. The man was alone in the car, police said. He was pronounced dead at The Queen's Medical Center.
Pedestrian hit in airport area
A 49-year-old man was in critical condition yesterday after being struck by a car late Friday in the airport area.
Police said the man, who may be homeless, was crossing Koapaka Street west of Paiea Street at about 7:15 p.m. when he was hit by a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by a 58-year-old woman from the Windward area. The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
He was dressed in dark clothing and was not using a crosswalk, police said. The area was lighted by streetlights.
UH links with Latin America
A partnership between an international agricultural university in Latin America and the University of Hawai'i has been forged to foster agricultural sustainability and innovation.
It's the first time UH has entered an educational agreement in Latin America.
UH and EARTH University in Costa Rica will cooperate to allow student exchanges between the two institutions. Maui Community College will serve as host to EARTH University interns and facilitate exchange opportunities for Hawai'i students.
