Key House votes

The House met last week but did not pass any major legislation.

Key Senate votes

1. Janice Rogers Brown

On Friday, the Senate failed, 53-43, to shut off debate on the nomination of Janice Rogers Brown to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Sixty votes were needed. A "yea" vote was to close debate.

Hawai'i votes: Daniel Akaka (D) NAY; Dan Inouye (D) DID NOT VOTE

What's ahead: The House and Senate are rushing to complete work before the planned Nov. 21 adjournment for the year. Bills on energy, creating a prescription drug benefit in the Medicare program, extending a ban on Internet access taxes and spending bills for fiscal 2004 are all in various stages of the legislative process. It is unclear if Congress will complete work on any of them, or when lawmakers will leave for the year.
