BYUH holds off HPU in volleyball

Chun Yi Lin had 26 kills and Yu Chuan Weng 24 to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 30-24, 23-30, 34-32, 25-30, 15-10 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in the Pacific West Conference women's volleyball regular-season finale for both teams at St. Andrews Priory gym last night.

Flavia Brakling had 26 kills and Nadica Karleusa 23 for Hawai'i Pacific.

HPU (15-7 overall and 6-4 in the PacWest) got the conference's automatic berth in to the NCAA Division II Tournament when BYUH, which was 19-2 overall and 9-0 in the PacWest before last night's match, announced on Friday it would forfeit 14 matches and the conference title for using an ineligible player. BYUH is the defending national champion.

• UH-Hilo sweeps Chaminade: Sara Pilgreen and Christina Cooley each had 11 kills to lead the Vulcans to a 30-22, 30-25, 31-29 Pacific West victory over the Silverswords in the season finale for both teams at UHH Gymnasium.

UH-Hilo finished 8-15 overall and 4-6 in the PacWest. Chaminade finished 10-13 and 4-6.

Kahala Kabalis had 20 kills and Valasi Sepulona 17 for Chaminade.

TENNIS

• Top seed falls in Futures: Todd Widom of the United States and Lamine Ouahab of Algeria advanced to today's final of the inaugural Honolulu USTA Futures Men's Professional Tennis Tournament at Diamond Head Tennis Center.

Widom, the No. 6 seed, defeated top seed Peter Clarke of Ireland 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. No. 2 Ouahab beat No. 3 Rajeev Ram of the United States, 6-3, 6-0.

Today's singles final starts at 10 a.m. at Diamond Head Tennis Center, followed by the doubles final between Widom and Scott Lipsky and Trace Fielding and Keith From.

CROSS COUNTRY

• UH season ends: The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team ended its season, finishing 22nd at the NCAA West Regional at Gresham, Ore., yesterday.

The field of 31 teams and 207 competitors ran a 6,000-meter course at Blue Lake Park.

Stanford won the title for the fifth straight year with 45 points. UCLA (69) was second, followed by Washington (94).

Dana Buchanan, a freshman from Ontario, Canada, led the seven Rainbow Wahine in the race, posting a time of 22 minutes and 45 seconds for 90th place. Alicia Craig of Stanford won in 20:06.
