Higashiyama clings to lead in State Open

Troy Higashiyama of 'Aiea shot a 7-over-par 79, but kept a one-stroke lead in the open division after the second round of the Prince Resorts Hawai'i State Open at Hapuna Golf Course on the Big Island.

Higashiyama, an amateur, was at 150 entering today's final round.

Mauna Kea Resort pro Kevin Hayashi, shot 73 and was at 151. Kris Moe, a pro from the Northern California Section shot a 78 today and was at 152. Champions Tour member Dave Eichelberger shot a 75 and is tied for fourth at 153 with Dean Dorothy (78).

Kirk Smith, a part-time Kona resident, led the senior division after a 76—148. Tied for second were Larry Stubblefield (78—150), George Newbeck (76—150) and Ken Springer (74—150).

Stephanie Kono leads the women's division, after a 78—156. Christine Kim is second after a 75—161.

• Cotner reaches final stage: Keoke Cotner shot a final-round 1-under 71 and finished tied for ninth at a second-stage PGA Tour qualifying tournament at McKinney, Texas.

Cotner, a 1989 Kamehameha School graduate, finished at 287 and will advance to the final 108-hole qualifying Dec. 3-8 at the Orange County National Golf Course in Winter Garden, Fla.

Kevin Warrick, who attended Leilehua High School, shot 75—308 and finished tied for 67th.

At a qualifier in Beaumont, Calif., where the top 20 and ties will also advance to the final stage, Punahou School graduate Jim Seki shot 71—210 and is in a four-way tie for 20th heading into today's final round.
