Reichel's new CD delayed

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

OFF THE RECORD: Keali'i Reichel's new CD, "Ke'alaokamaile (The Scent of Maile)," was to be released today, but producers had to send back 50,000 copies after a packaging flaw was discovered. A keepsake liner booklet meant to be integrated into the CD design was not properly placed, hence the unfortunate (and costly) delay. The CD honors the memory of Reichel's kupuna, including his beloved "Gramma," the late Kamaile Puhi Kane. It is expected to be released Dec. 9 — we hope with all the right elements in the place. Psssst: We've heard the disc; it's absolutely wonderful. And, clearly, this will be a holiday favorite for giving and for receiving. ...

Barry Flanagan of Hapa has been recording a duet CD with R. Carlos Nakai, the world fusion Native American flautist, for a spring 2004 release on Nakai's Canyon Records label. Nakai performed in a world peace rally in New York City that included the Dalai Lama and is a leader of this musical genre. Meanwhile, Flanagan and his Hapa partner, Nathan Aweau, are back from a five-city, 10-concert tour of Japan and are gigging Fridays at Chai's Island Bistro. Flanagan's "Instrumental Peace" CD reached the No. 1 spot in the world music category on New York's MC Radio, a cable outlet. ...

NAMES 'N' PLACES: Keola Beamer surprised his mother, Nona Beamer, when she was among the honorees at the Na Pua O Pauahi event recently at the Hawai'i Theatre. He snuck over from Maui to sing a medley of three of her tunes, "Pupu Hinuhinu," "Kahuli Aku," and "Kahuelo Opae," much to the delight of all, including other honorees Matsuo Takabuki, Col. David Peters, Emmet Aluli, Isabella Abbott and Pualani Kanahele. "I don't think I can properly explain what an honor it is to be the son of Nona Beamer," says Keola, "but it fills my heart with aloha to think of all the lives Mom has touched with her teaching and her music." Indeed, Auntie Nona has been a beacon of Hawaiian creativity and artistry for decades.

Speaking of Keola: His popular ki ho'alu documentary, available till now only on VHS, will be released on DVD today. ...

NOTABLES: Kelsey Grammer of "Frasier" escaped the recent California wildfires with a quick family trip to Maui. Pacific 'O chef James McDonald whipped up some of their favorites — Thai beef salad and chocolate pate, among others — and dropped them off at the Grammers' Maui home. ...

Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake reportedly are still house-hunting in Kahala.

Those in the know say don't be surprised to find her shopping at the Martin & MacArthur store on Kalakaua Avenue or at the Kahala Mall, one of the couple's favorite shopping escapes. ...
