Airport gunman gets 3-year term

Associated Press

A Kaua'i man who admitted to threatening an airport security officer and firing two gunshots in the Lihu'e Airport in May was sentenced yesterday to more than three years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway sentenced Lloyd Albinio, 24, of Kapa'a, to three years and one month in prison, the minimum possible under federal guidelines.

Albinio must surrender to authorities in January. His prison sentence is to be followed by five years of supervised release.

Albinio pleaded guilty to firing the shots May 8 that led to the closing of the small airport and forced the evacuation of about 200 people. No one was injured.

Authorities said Albinio went into the Hawaiian Airlines baggage area, and pulled a semiautomatic pistol on an unarmed guard, then fired it into the ceiling. He then ran toward the gates and fired another shot into the floor. Police said Albinio order-ed passengers away, sat in a chair and pointed the gun at his head. He surrendered when police arrived.
