Faith groups to discuss drugs

Two faith groups, the International Prayer Connection and Fast and Pray International, will host a drug strategy summit at 7 tonight at 1270 Queen Emma St., Suite 305.

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona will discuss faith-based solutions to the ice problem. Organizers say they also will talk about creating a "Pray Hawai'i" statewide prayer network and anti-drug rallies and concerts for youth.

Satellite city hall plans closure

The satellite city hall and city store in Ala Moana Center will close for 10 days beginning Saturday while one wall is reinforced to accommodate an adjoining tenant. They will reopen Dec. 4.

During the closure, service will be available at other satellite city halls at Fort Street Mall, Kalihi and Hawai'i Kai. Saturday service is available at Hawai'i Kai, Pearlridge Center and Windward Mall. For more information, call the city at 523-4385.


Psychologist to speak at Iolani

Michael Thompson, a consultant and psychologist for children and families, will speak today at Iolani School in an event sponsored by the Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools.

Thompson, of Cambridge, Mass., will talk about some of the challenges of adolescence. The event starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.

The school is at 563 Kamoku St.


Event honors UH official

A fund-raising dinner to honor Joyce Tsunoda, who has given 37 years of service to the University of Hawai'i system, including 20 years as the chancellor who helped build the UH community college system, will be held today at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom.

Proceeds from the event will help establish the Joyce S. Tsunoda UHCC Leadership Development Endowed Fund, to offer community college faculty, staff, students and administrators participation in leadership training, professional development and other education-related classes and activities.

Student artists to be honored

Forty-eight young artists who are finalists in the 2003 Leeward Young Artists program will be honored today at Kapolei Hale.

Their works will be on display in the lobby, and 10 winners will be announced in ceremonies that begin at 6 p.m. Gallery viewing begins at 5 p.m.

The program has been giving recognition to young artists for a decade and is sponsored by the Estate of James Campbell and the state Department of Education.

The artists represent 19 Leeward schools, from kindergarten to high school. Kapolei Hale is at 1000 Uluohia St.
