Advertiser Staff

Ryan Abrahams scored 20 points and Terrance Troupe had 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to a 78-75 men's basketball victory over Saint Martin's College at Lacey, Wash. last night.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Saint Martin's Brandon Hartley led all scorers with 32 points. Niko Nunogawa added 17.

The Saints led 42-41 at halftime.

The Vulcans continue their road trip with games at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.

Swimming

Clewett honored: Katie Clewett of the University of Hawai'i was named Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week yesterday.

Clewett, a sophomore from Australia, won the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 4.70 seconds) and 200 breaststroke (2:21.00) in Friday's victory over the University of the Pacific in a non-conference meet.

Clewett also helped the Rainbow Wahine win the 200 medley relay (1:44.68).

SURFING

No surf: The opening events in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing were again postponed yesterday due to insufficient conditions at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.

The Vans Hawaiian Pro for men and Roxy Pro for women have been on hold since Nov. 12 because significant waves have not arrived on O'ahu's North Shore.

Conditions permitting, the contests could begin today. Contest officials have until Nov. 23 to compete four days of competition.

For daily status of the events, call 596-7873.

SIGNINGS

Roberts signs with Pepperdine: Seabury Hall's Lecca Roberts signed a national letter of intent yesterday to join Pepperdine's volleyball team next season.

Roberts, who is 6 feet 3-1/2, will play middle blocker for the Waves, according to her mother, Jane Kocivarn.

Roberts is a Fab 50 recruit, and was offered a scholarship to play for the University of Hawai'i. She was also recruited by Stanford, USC, Santa Barbara, Loyola Marymount, California and UCLA.

Last year she was named to the Advertiser's All-State second-team.

Kamehameha's Soo to Idaho State: Kamehameha guard India Soo has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Idaho State women's basketball team next fall.

Soo, who is 5 feet 6, is also a standout soccer player.

"India will give us quickness and toughness defensively," said Idaho State head coach Jon Newlee, a former University of Hawai'i women's assistant coach.
