Bagged and tagged

Advertiser Staff and News Services

It's very Gwyneth Paltrow in "View From the Top."

This vintage-inspired luggage comes complete with passport stamps and a worn, well-traveled look.

Gilda Minassian, owner of Calista by Cotton Cargo in Ward Warehouse and Kahala Mall, says the nostalgic cases flew out of her stores. Now they're back in stock, priced at $49 to $94.

The bags are made in Brazil of coconut fiber and come in bright '60s colors such as orange, yellow and green. Styles include hatboxes, briefcases, storage trunks and cosmetic cases.

Radio comedy taping

Hawai'i Public Radio is trying something new: an old-style radio show.

"Looking for Linda," Don Bucholz's radio comedy, will tape the first of three half-hour shows, with audience and sound effects, at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Atherton Studio, 738 Kaheka St. Broadcast dates will be announced later.

The shows feature Walter Eccles, Stephanie Kuroda, William Boynton, Pauline Izuierdo and Andrew Meader. David C. Farmer directs. William Sage is show announcer, and Jason Taglianetti provides sound effects.

Tickets are free, but reservations are required because of limited seating. Reservations and information: 955-8821.

Yule tidings to do

Every year, you swear you'll get your holiday cards out earlier. And every year, you scramble at the last minute. You wind up with cards you don't even like, a family photo where one kid looks grumpy, or patriotic flag stamps because they were the only ones in the vending machine and you didn't have to wait in line.

We understand. So here's your reminder to start early, and a few things to consider:

  • If you're sending a photo of the kids, book your appointment. Then you have time to retake it if your 2-year-old decides it's the day he doesn't want to smile.
  • Buy your stamps now at the post office or online at shop.usps.com. You'll be certain to get the cute stamps.
  • Order your preprinted cards. Special-order cards can take about 10 working days to arrive. And if you're using a photo in your card, make sure to bring it with you to the studio.

Fatherly festivities

FRAZIER
A daylong fathers' appreciation conference and family fun day will be Saturday at Kamehameha Schools campus, sponsored by the Hawai'i Coalition for Dads.

This event celebrates fathers (married, divorced, single) and father figures, offering 17 workshops for the men. Herman R. Frazier, director of athletics at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, will give a talk.

For the keiki, there are crafts, games and a presentation of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by Kamehameha students.

Cost: $5 ($2 for ages 6-18; age 5 and younger are free), including continental breakfast and lunch. Information: Greg Farstrup, 841-2245.
