Saint Mary's Montero earns soccer honors

Two players from Hawai'i high schools were selected to the West Coast Conference All-Conference soccer teams.

MONTERO
Saint Mary's senior defender Chelsea Montero (Kamehameha '00 of Mililani) was named to the first team, after leading the Gaels in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points. It was Montero's first selection.

Loyola Marymount senior midfielder Shari Nishikawa (Iolani '00 of Kane'ohe) was named to the second team, her third all-conference honor.

• Oregon sophomore forward Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku) was named to the Pac-10 All-Conference second team. She notched a school season record in points (21) and tied the season shots (70) and assists (7) records.

• Pacific senior midfielder Moani Lau (Kamehameha '00 of Honolulu) was named to the Northwest All-Conference second team, her third all-conference honor in three seasons at Pacific.

• Idaho State freshman Jen Loo (Mililani '03) made her penalty shot in a shootout in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament as the Bengals upset No. 14 Utah, 1-0.

Idaho State lost to Brigham Young, 2-0, in the second round Saturday. Sophomore Charlene Lui (Punahou '02 of Wai'alae Iki) started for the Cougars.

Women's Tennis

Long Beach State senior Kelly Chan (Konawaena '00 of Kailua, Kona) became the first two-year captain in coach Jenny Hilt-Costello's seven seasons.

Chan was awarded the Lynn Hoyem Leadership Award last month. The award is one of three inspirational awards given to currently enrolled students.

Football

Occidental (Los Angeles) sophomore outside linebacker Derek Turbin (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) had two tackles, including a sack, in a 34-24 win over Cal Lutheran on Nov. 8.

Sophomore wide receiver Ric Fukushima (Moanalua '02 of Honolulu) and sophomore outside linebacker David Marsh (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) also play for Occidental.

Women's Basketball

Eastern Kentucky freshman Fatai Hala'api'api (Lahainaluna '02) was a rebound shy of a double-double in her first collegiate experience, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds in 13 minutes in a 90-32 win over the Sports-Reach Crusaders Saturday.
