Lin unanimous pick as PacWest's best

Advertiser Staff

Brigham Young University-Hawai'i women's volleyball player Chun Yi Lin was a unanimous choice as Pacific West Conference Player of the Year and Chaminade's Patti Hardimon was selected as Freshman of the Year in voting by the league's coaches this week.

Hawai'i Pacific's Tita Ahuna was named the PacWest Coach of the Year for guiding her 18th-ranked Sea Warriors to a 15-7 overall record and 6-4 conference record.

Lin, a 6-1 sophomore middle blocker from Pingtune, Taiwan, received first-place votes on every opposing coach's ballot. Lin led the PacWest in hitting percentage (.465) and blocks per game (1.16), and was second in the conference in kills per game (4.43).

Hardimon was an overwhelming choice as the PacWest's top freshman, beating out St. Francis graduate Elizabeth Narkon of Western New Mexico. Hardimon, a middle blocker, was also selected to the all-conference second team.

Besides Lin, the PacWest first team consisted of BYUH middle blocker/outside hitter Ashley Moeai, HPU outside hitter Flavia Brakling and setter Vera Oliveira, Chaminade outside hitter Kahala Kabalis and Hawai'i-Hilo outside hitter Sara Pilgreen.

• Weng receives honor: Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball player Yu Chuan Weng earned Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honors for her performance against Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday.

The 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Hsinchu, Taiwan, led the team in kills (25), digs (15) and hit .250 on 56 attempts in the Seasiders' five-game victory.

Weng ended the season ranked in the top 10 in four of six main statistical categories: hitting percentage (.267, 7th), kills per game (4.08, 6th), digs per game (3.16, 8th), and service aces per game (0.38, 9th).

Weng was also named to the Verizon All-Academic District VIII second-team for her 3.36 GPA in exercise and sport science.

• Statistics will stand: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team will be allowed to keep its statistics from this season despite having to forfeit the Pacific West Conference title and the automatic NCAA Tournament berth for using an ineligible player, the league announced.

All records and statistics from the season, including the matches in which the ineligible player competed will stand in the record books, according to an NCAA bylaw.

That means BYUH will get to keep its 20-2 overall record and 10-0 Pacific West Conference record. The NCAA rule also means that the other five PacWest schools will still have three losses each from BYUH.

Last week, BYUH announced that it used an ineligible player in 14 matches, including nine conference matches. The school levied a self-imposed penalty that cost them the PacWest title and the automatic NCAA Tournament berth that goes with it.

As a result, second-place Hawai'i Pacific received the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The 18th-ranked Sea Warriors will play Cal State Bakersfield in the Pacific Regional tomorrow at RIMAC Arena on the UC San Diego campus. The match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Hawai'i time.
