SHOW BIZ
Sequel to 'Lilo & Stitch' due in '06

By Wayne Harada

COMING UP: You haven't heard the last of "Lilo & Stitch" yet. Count on "Lilo & Stitch II," a movie sequel to the popular set-in-Hawai'i animated film, sometime in 2006. Yes, that's a long wait, but with the current spin-off show on the Disney channel and a just-released "Island of Adventures" interactive DVD, there's interest in another movie. Expect the movie soundtrack to boast Hawaiian tunes by the father-and-son team of Dennis and David Kamakahi, who report, on their Web site (hometown.aol.com/naukilo1/index1.html) that they've been welcomed into the Disney 'ohana. "Lilo & Stitch" creators have hired the Kamakahis to render the main theme song (composed by someone else, but with Dennis' Hawaiian translation). ...

Speaking of movie music: Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Over the Rainbow" was briefly heard (only the humming intro) in the trailer for Warner Bros.' "The Big Bounce," starring Owen Wilson. "Rainbow" won't be in the final cut of "Bounce" when it bows Jan. 30 because a competing Adam Sandler flick for Sony Pictures, "50 First Dates," locked in exclusive rights for its Feb. 13, 2004 launch. Widely used on TV series ("ER") and in other notable films, Bruddah Iz is very much a part of movie music-dom. ...

"Along Came Polly" is the newest title for Universal's filmed-in-Hawai'i project starring Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston and Debra Messing, due Jan. 16. ...

WEEKEND WRAP: Makana's "Ki ho'alu" concert Saturday night at the Hawai'i Theatre was an intriguing blend of the singer-composer's traditional Island artistry with a mix of nostalgic, old-time, feel-good sounds, provided by guest artists Tau Moe on steel guitar and 'ukulele player-singer Bill Tapia. With 10 hanging guitars as his principal backdrop, Makana demonstrated his earnest, easy-going vocal and strumming styles, yielding repeated rhapsodic moods. His connection to and admiration of his Act II guests said it all: respect your elders and share your time with them. ...

At the Waikiki Community Center's retro gala Friday night at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom, a slimmed-down singer-chanter Joe Recca, still battling throat cancer, offered a mele for his dear friend, cousin and employer, Cha Thompson, of Tihati Productions, who was honored — along with singer Amy

Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays — as a treasure of Waikiki. The Makaha Sons headlined the entertainment, enabling Thompson to hula. "My shoes have been off — waiting to be asked (to dance)," she quipped before getting up on stage. ...

NOTABLES: "Man of La Mancha," at Army Community Theatre's Richardson Theatre, is blessed with robust vocal talent in lead and ensemble capacities. Bryan Bender as Don Quixote, Mary Chesnut Hicks as Aldonza, and Scott Moura as Sancho Panza, and Gordon Ing as the Padre were luminous in song. The show, however, was diminished with a lighting board problem at last Thursday's opening night, creating challenges for all on stage. The problem has since been resolved...
