Charges lodged in bank holdups

A 36-year-old man has been charged with two counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery involving three incidents from Oct. 3 to Nov. 17.

Fernando Ruiz Matutina was arrested Tuesday in Kalihi Valley on suspicion of robbing the Kalihi branch of First Hawaiian Bank on Oct. 3 and the Mapunapuna branch of Bank of Hawaii on Oct. 7, and attempting to rob the Kalihi branch of Hawaii National Bank on Monday.

Matutina admitted to the three crimes during an interview at police headquarters, said a court affidavit by deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Ogawa.


LEEWARD

Ko Olina sets Leeward table

The Ko Olina Community Association will host its fifth annual Thanksgiving Outreach Project on Saturday. The largest outreach program of its kind in the state, the daylong effort is expected to feed some 4,000 homeless, low-income and single-parent families in Leeward O'ahu.

The meals will be delivered to 13 area churches by United Parcel Service.

As in the past, this year's feast is being prepared by chefs from the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Kapolei High School, with assistance from food service students from Waipahu and Nanakuli high schools.


NORTH SHORE

Waialua library book fair ready

The Friends of Waialua Public Library will hold its annual Christmas Book Fair on the library lawn tomorrow and Saturday. New books and CDs from Borders Ward Centre will line a dozen tables, and buyers will be given a 15 percent discount on all purchases.

The Friends also will receive an additional discount from Borders, which the organization will donate to the library to buy books, DVDs and audio book tapes.

The book fair will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.


WINDWARD

Citizens patrol seeks helpers

Volunteers are being sought for a citizens patrol that will document illegal dumping on Kapa'a Quarry Road in Kailua. Two-person teams will receive free 10-hour training beginning next year.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older and be able to commit to one three-hour daytime shift every two weeks. Patrols will provide support to police and the prosecutor's office.
