Pizza Hut's grants promote literacy

Hawai'i Pizza Hut has made $77,595 in donations to four literacy groups.

Hawai'i Literacy Inc. will spend a $20,000 grant for a mobile literacy van on the Wai'anae coast, while Parents and Children Together will use its $20,000 grant for adult lending libraries and resource libraries in the Kalihi and Ko'olauloa neighborhoods.

The Kaua'i Children's Discovery Museum will use a $20,000 grant on a family literacy project, and a $17,595 grant to the Salvation Army will go for educational and curriculum materials for tutoring and reading programs.

Saint Louis receives $25,000

Greg Gomes, president of Webco, has created a foundation and donated $25,000 to his alma mater, Saint Louis School.

Gomes has raised more than $1 million for the private school's education foundation, which helps with scholarships and financial aid.

Travel agency opens KCC office

With Monday's opening of an office of Regal Travel on the Kapi'olani Community College campus, students in the hospitality and tourism programs will have a hands-on laboratory in which to work, one that will offer students and University of Hawai'i personnel travel discounts.

"Students will be able to intern on campus with Regal, and at other branches," said Ron Umehira, chair of the KCC Hospitality and Tourism Department. "They'll be learning a live reservation program that United uses, called Apollo, and will be booking airline reservations, hotels and itineraries."

Additionally, students will be exposed to other training opportunities, including ones with Norwegian Cruise Lines. The student internships are unpaid.

Regal was chosen in a bid process, Umehira said. It's the first time a travel agency has been on campus.

HPU singers seek holiday gigs

The Hawai'i Pacific University International Vocal Ensemble is available to perform at holiday parties — with the hope of raising money for airfare to attend a nationwide choir festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City next summer.

The 45-minute holiday concerts will consist of international songs and familiar holiday carols. Companies or organizations can request a quartet, octet or the entire ensemble for a donation of $350.

The group will be available through Dec. 15, any day of the week. To reserve a date or for further information, call Susan M. Duprey, director of choral activities at HPU, at 544-1127 or e-mail sduprey@hpu.edu.

Missouri botanist to speak at UH

Botanist and conservation advocate Peter Raven, director of the Missouri Botanical Garden, will give a free lecture at 7 p.m. tomorrow on "A Sustainable World: What Will it Take to Achieve" at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Campus Center Ballroom.

A question-and-answer session will follow.

UH to celebrate Latin music, food

A celebration of Latin music and Latin food will bring "Caliente" night to the University of Hawai'i's Manoa campus from 4:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Hale Aloha residential dining hall.

The Cuban or Latin influence in cuisine is spreading across the country and is one of the hottest trends, according to Sodexho USA, which handles the campus food service.

The spicy menu will include firecracker prawns with watercress aioli, with food prepared as customers watch. The evening is part of the Eatertainment series sponsored by the University Dining Series.
