UH receives letters of intent from 5 recruits

Advertiser Staff

KAULANA GOULD

Kamehameha all-state catcher Kaulana Gould and Kapolei infielder Valana Manuma are two of five recruits who have signed letters of intent to play softball at the University of Hawai'i, the school announced yesterday.

Joining the two high school seniors are Australia high school senior catcher/outfielder Louise Harriden and two junior college transfers in catcher/infielder Kristy Yoshizawa and Janelle Rosa.

Gould was an Advertiser all-state first-team catcher for the Warriors' state runner-up team as a junior. She batted .361.

Manuma, who will be in Kapolei's first graduating class, batted .455 for the Hurricanes last year. She also played second base for the baseball team.

Harriden, like previous Australians recruited by coach Bob Coolen, comes with national team experience. Her 19-under team won the bronze medal at the World Games in China over the summer.

Yoshizawa, who will be a junior in eligibility for UH, attended Sacramento State before transferring to Sierra JC (Calif.). She is from Rancho Cordova, Calif.

Rosa, who will be enrolling as a sophomore, attends San Jose JC. The 6-foot-1 Rosa played basketball at Cabrillo JC (Calif.) before transferring to SJJC. She played for the San Jose Sting summer club team, batting .357. She is from Aptos, Calif. She can play catcher, first base and the outfield.

Coolen said he is looking at three walk-ons before deciding if he needs to pick up more recruits later in the year.
