HPU wins opener at volleyball regional

Freshman middle blocker Barbara Martin pounded a team-high 15 kills as the fifth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team beat fourth-ranked Cal State Bakersfield, 30-26, 24-30, 21-30, 30-23, 15-11, in the NCAA Division II Pacific Regional first round last night in La Jolla, Calif.

HPU (16-7) will play host UC San Diego (25-4) in a semifinal today at 5:30 p.m. UC San Diego is ranked No. 1 in the nation and is the top seed in the regional. The match will be broadcast on radio (1500 AM).

Yesterday, HPU broke a 10-10 tie in Game 5 with a game-ending 5-1 run. During the run, HPU got one kill each from setter Vera Oliveira and middle blocker Paula Koikopoulos, and a block by Koikopoulos. HPU scored the final two points on hitting errors by Cal State Bakersfield (20-8).

HPU's Nadica Karleusa tallied 14 kills and Koikopoulos added 11 kills. Jessica Slayton led Cal State Bakersfield with 25 kills.

Today's match will be the second meeting between HPU and UC San Diego this season. The Tritons defeated the Sea Warriors, 3-1, on Sept. 13.



GOLF

McLachlin tied for 69th: Honolulu's Parker McLachlin shot his second straight 2-over-par 74 yesterday and was tied for 69th place after two rounds of a second-stage PGA Tour qualifying tournament at Seaside, Calif.

McLachlin, a Punahou School and UCLA graduate, has a 36-hole total of 148 and is 12 stroke behind the leader at the Black Horse Course.

At the Champions Tour final stage qualifying at Coral Springs, Fla., former Hilo resident Steven Veriato shot a 1-under 71 for a 220 total. Mark McNulty is the third-round leader at 69—207.



BASKETBALL

• HPU wins opener: Peter Bullock scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as host Alaska Anchorage crushed Hawai'i Pacific, 101-72, in the regular-season opener for both teams at the AT&T Alascom Jamboree last night.

The Seawolves shot 54 percent (38 of 70) and held the Sea Warriors to 37 percent (24 of 65) shooting. Alaska Anchorage led 49-39 at halftime.

HPU's Aaron Abrams scored a team-high 25 points and Marvin Noble added 18.

Alaska Anchorages' Adam Fitt-Chappell and Kemmy Burgess each scored 20 and Mark Drake added 13.



TENNIS

• Top seed Quahab moves on: The Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures' top seed, Lamine Quahab, rolled to victory yesterday on the Big Island.

The Algeria-native beat Trevor Spracklin of the United States, 6-3, 6-1.

Doug Bohaboy, the second seed, was upset by Fritz Wolmarans of Russia, 6-2, 6-2.

Matches continue today at 10 a.m. at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Tennis Gardens. Admission is free.
