Defending state champion Saint Louis found success with Desmond Hanohano early and often last night against Mililani in the quarterfinals of the First Hawaiian Bank State Football Division I Championships.

Hanohano, a 6-foot-5 senior wide receiver, caught nine passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns as the Crusaders pounded the Trojans, 47-12, at Aloha Stadium.

A crowd of 5,665 watched Hanohano break three single-game state tournament records: most receiving yards (307), most touchdowns (four) and longest touchdown reception (81 yards).

"Desmond came up huge in this game," said Saint Louis quarterback Keali'i Perbera, who completed 9 of 16 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns. "With him on the outside, it's a big target out there."

Saint Louis (8-1) will play Baldwin in an 8 p.m. semifinal Friday at Aloha Stadium. Mililani (9-3) lost its third consecutive game and was eliminated from the tournament.

Hanohano deflected credit to Perbera, the offensive line and the scout team that helped him prepare for last night's game.

"The scout guys during the week were giving us good looks all week long," Hanohano said. "We showed up to play and made big plays."

Mililani coach James Millwood said his team lacked the finishing touch. The Trojans held the ball for 31 minutes and 52 seconds, but could only muster two touchdowns.

"We tried to move the ball; we had 15 first downs (to Saint Louis' 12), but we didn't get the ball in the end zone," Millwood said. "We just gave (Saint Louis) too many opportunities with the ball. They're a big-strike team."

Saint Louis scored on its first possession when Perbera hit Hanohano on the left sideline for am 81-yard catch-and-run touchdown. Hanohano broke several tackles on his way to the end zone.

In the second quarter, Perbera found Hanohano again on a 7-yard touchdown. The PAT failed and Saint Louis led 13-0. On the drive, Perbera completed 2 of 3 passes for 33 yards, including a 26-yard completion to Aaron Bain.

The Trojans responded on their next possession with an 8-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 53-yard pass from Maka Kahoano to Jon Santos. The PAT failed and Mililani trailed 13-6 with 5:07 left.

Saint Louis would strike again just before halftime when Hanohano caught his third touchdown pass. On second-and-10 from the Mililani 34, Perbera lofted a high pass into the end zone and Hanohano made a tough catch while falling down to give Saint Louis a 20-6 lead with 1:02 remaining.

Hanohano continued his scoring streak in the third quarter, hauling in a 63-yard pass from Perbera for a 27-6 Saint Louis lead.

"We had no answers for him," Millwood said. "We didn't have anybody who could match up with him. He's a good weapon and they kept going to him."

The Crusaders got their fifth touchdown from their defense when defensive back Gabriel Vierra intercepted Kahoano and ran it back 46 yards.

Saint Louis running back B.J. Batts added a 2-yard touchdown run and reserve quarterback Stanley Nihipali scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter for a 47-6 lead.

Mililani's Santos scored the final touchdown on a 40-yard pass from Kahoano in the fourth quarter.
