BYUH's Smith captures NCAA cross country crown

CHELSEA SMITH

Brigham Young-Hawai'i sophomore Chelsea Smith won the NCAA II Women's Cross Country National Championship meet yesterday in Raleigh, N.C.

Smith finished the 6-kilometer race in 20 minutes, 33 seconds, setting a school record and becoming the first NCAA individual champion in BYUH history.

"Everyone was taking the race so seriously," said Smith, who is from Mead, Wash. "I just wanted to go out and have a good time. It was lots of fun."

So much fun that she won the race by 25 seconds, capping a season in which she set a school record every time she raced. Smith finished first in every meet this season except the UH Big Wave Invitational, where she placed second behind Division I All-American Michaela Mannova of BYU.

"Chelsea worked very hard this year and she deserved to win the championship," said BYUH coach Norman Kaluhiokalani.

VOLLEYBALL

HPU falls short: Hawai'i Pacific's run through the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Pacific Regional came to an abrupt halt last night in La Jolla, Calif.

Cal State San Bernardino swept the Sea Warriors, 30-28, 30-21, 30-22, in the final at UC San Diego's RIMAC Arena.

Fifth-seeded HPU had beaten fourth-seeded Cal State Bakersfield and top-seeded and No. 1-ranked UC San Diego — both in five games — to reach the championship match.

Flavia Brakling had 14 kills and 15 digs for the Sea Warriors, who ended the season at 17-8.

Kim Ford had 20 kills and 15 digs for the Coyotes (28-4), who advance to the national elite eight.

TENNIS

Top seed ousted: Todd Widom beat top-seeded Lamine Ouahab, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, yesterday to reach the final of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures Tournament.

Widom will play Paul Logtens today at 11 a.m.

Logtens ousted Fritz Wolmarans, 6-4, 7-5, in yesterday's other semifinal.

GOLF

McLachlin misses: Honolulu's Parker McLachlin shot a final-round 1-over 73 yesterday and failed to advance at the second stage PGA Tour qualifying tournament in Seaside, Calif.

McLachlin finished at 3-over 291, missing the cutoff score of 284 needed to advance to the final stage.
