Logtens wins Waikoloa tennis after wild ending

Advertiser Staff

Fifth-seeded Paul Logtens rallied past fourth-seed Todd Widom, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4, to win the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures Men's Professional Tennis Tournament on the Big Island.

Widom won last week's Futures event in Honolulu, but ran into trouble against Logtens, who earned $1,350 for the victory.

Logtens' victory was sealed when Widom was given a ball abuse penalty to end the match. Logtens led 5-4 in the final set, when Widom, trailing 0-30 and serving, "whacked a ball out of the stadium" out of frustration, according to a news release from the USTA.

Widom earlier in the third set was given a time violation point penalty and a game penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after making a verbal comment to the umpire, the USTA said.

After the singles final, Widom withdrew from the doubles final because of cramping, giving Trace Fielding and Keith From the title.
