Musician sidelined by crash

OUT OF ACTION: It's been a season of mishaps and misfortunes for Tino & the Rhythm Klub, the stellar attraction at the Sheraton Waikiki's Esprit lounge. Ricky Ricardo, the group's saxophonist and percussionist, suffered head and chest injuries a few nights back when his pickup truck was side-swiped by another vehicle on the H-1. The truck flipped over twice, landing upside down. Fellow group member Lucky Salvador happened to be driving by, recognized Ricardo's vehicle and backtracked. After Ricardo stayed overnight at The Queen's Medical Center, he was released — but it's uncertain when he may be able to return. ...

Then on another night, lead singer Tino Ibach's vehicle was totaled in another accident, but fortunately, he escaped unscathed and still is performing with the group.

Meanwhile, Adney Atabey, you recall, had a heart attack and remains out of commission. Michael DeGuzman has stepped in to play sax and percussion. ...

NAMES 'N' PLACES: Congressman Neil Abercrombie saw the "now open" sign at Wai'oli Tea Room in Manoa, so ventured in for lunch, when he recognized new general manager Brian Jahnke. Jahnke, longtime front-of-the-house manager at Keo's Thai Cuisine, is overseeing Wai'oli for lunch and afternoon tea, but maintains his Keo's ties — on Tuesday nights only. ...

Andy Wachowski, co-director with brother Larry of the "Matrix" trilogy, has been vacationing at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental. ...

Since artist Peggy Chun was in The Queen's Medical Center and unable to attend last week's luncheon at Compadres honoring her induction into the restaurant's Wall of Fame, Chun, who is struggling with ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease), got a visit from her entertainer pals, who performed at the function. Keola and Moana Beamer, joined by his mom, Nona Beamer, and her hanai son Kaliko Beamer Trapp, brought along Miss Aloha Hula Jennifer Oyama to entertain Chun and the nursing staff. Chicken skin. ...

Compadres owner Rick Enos, who arranged the aforementioned event, has been named to the new position of chairman emeritus of the San Francisco Giants Foundation. That group honored him recently and gave $1,000 to Enos' organization of choice — and he picked Friends of Peggy Chun. ...

WINNER'S CIRCLE: Achilles Gacis, a member of the Hawai'i Stunt Connection, has won a 25th Anniversary Classic Telly Award for his 15-minute short film, "Pacific Crossfire." The award honors non-network TV commercials and programs and nonbroadcast videos. ...

Jasmine May just returned from Colorado after winning top honors for Best Promo (non-professional division) in the Western region for her half-hour music television show on Channel 52. ...

Christopher Quiban won an American Choreographers Award for his work on an episode of "The Wayne Brady Show," topping a couple of heavyweights who worked on Celine Dion's Las Vegas spectacular and Cher's Farewell Tour. ...
