Diabetes ride raised $20,000

The American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure Honolulu bicycle event drew 190 cyclists and raised about $20,000.

The 25- and 50-kilometer rides raised money to be used for diabetes awareness and to support local programs and research.

State health officials estimate 100,000 Hawai'i residents have diabetes, and one in four may not know it. The ride was sponsored by Kraft Crystal Light.

Schools to get gift of chess

Rep. Corinne W.L. Ching, R-27th (Liliha, Pu'unui), is donating chess sets to three public schools this week: Likelike Elementary, Kawananakoa Middle and Lanakila Elementary schools.

Ching, a former teacher, said playing the game helps keep children in positive peer groups and lessens the chance of drug use at a critical stage of development.

Data available on home care

Mountain-Pacific Quality Health Foundation has been contracted to help consumers use federal data about the quality of care in home-health agencies across the country.

The consumer data, available for the first time, lists measures such as the percentage of patients who get better at bathing, moving around or taking their medicines correctly at individual agencies. It is available at www.medicare.gov and through the Medicare help line, (800) 633-4227.

Nearly 3,500 elderly and disabled people received care from Hawai'i's 14 Medicare-certified home-health agencies last year, according to Mountain-Pacific.

The agency will work with home-health agencies in Hawai'i, Guam and Saipan to improve quality of care.
