LAHAINA, Maui — The sleeping giant-killers of college basketball finally awoke.

After an 11-year nap, the Chaminade men's basketball team revived its reputation yesterday with a 52-49 upset of Villanova in the opening game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.

"I'm not sure how it feels yet," said fourth-year Chaminade head coach Aaron Griess. "I'm new at this."

It was Chaminade's monumental upset of No. 1 Virginia in 1982 that sparked the idea for the Maui Invitational, considered one of the most prestigious tournaments in the nation. But until yesterday, the Silverswords had lost 30 consecutive games as host of the tournament — a streak dating to 1992.

"Every year, it seems like we're right there most of the time, and it's just one or two possessions that take it away," Griess said. "This time, the one or two possessions went our way."

Kashif Reyes made sure of it. The 5-foot-10 senior guard drained 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, turning a 46-41 deficit into a 47-46 lead for Chaminade with 1:44 remaining. The Silverswords then made five of six free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.

Chaminade junior forward Sam Henning also played a key role down the stretch, getting a steal, an offensive rebound, and then two free throws in a 30-second span.

Henning finished with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Roy Stigall III led the Silverswords (1-0) with 14 points and four assists. Reyes scored eight of his 10 points in the second half.

Villanova led by as many as eight points midway through the second half, but Chaminade out-scored the Wildcats 15-5 in the game's final seven minutes.

It wasn't quite Virginia, but as Griess put it: "That's a Big East (Conference) team playing out there. They're short-handed, but they got McDonald's All-Americans on the floor ... that's a good team."

Chaminade is the only NCAA Division II team in the eight-team field.

Villanova was playing its third game in a third different time zone in four days. On Friday, the Wildcats won at Temple (Philadelphia); on Saturday, they beat Redlands at Redlands, Calif.

What's more, the Wildcats used only seven players because five others are either injured or on suspension.

"We have no excuses," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. "We had plenty of opportunities. (Chaminade) just made plays down the stretch, defensively and offensively, where we didn't."

Allen Ray led the Wildcats (2-1) with 19 points. Randy Foye added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Chris Charles contributed eight points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.

• Dayton 82, Central Michigan 63: All five starters scored in double figures to lead the Flyers past the Chippewas.

Keith Waleskowski led Dayton (2-0) with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Sean Finn and Mark Jones added 13 points each, and Monty Scott and Ramod Marshall had 11 apiece.

The Flyers raced to a 28-10 lead to start the game and was never really challenged after that.

Kevin Nelson led Central Michigan (0-1) with 17 points.

• San Diego State 83, Ohio State 61: The starting backcourt of Brandon Heath and Wesley Stokes combined for 50 points to lead the Aztecs (2-0) over the Buckeyes (0-2).

Heath, a 6-3 freshman, shot 5 of 6 from 3-point range and finished with 28 points. Stokes, a 6-foot junior, had 22 points and four assists.

The score was tied at 32 at halftime, but SDSU went on a 21-1 surge early in the second half to take control at 56-38. Heath drained three 3-pointers to highlight the run.

San Diego State will play Dayton in today's first semifinal at 2 p.m.
