Pros take lead in Governor's Cup

Hawai'i's golf professionals won the four-ball and alternate-ball competitions yesterday to take a 8 1/2-3 1/2 lead over the Hawai'i amateurs in the first day of the Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Pros Lance Suzuki and Casey Nakama provided the pros its largest margin of victory in the four-ball (better ball) with a 5-and-4 win over amateurs Paul Kimura and Chase Chulakote.
In the alternate ball (foursome), pros Phil Chun and Shane Hoshino beat amateurs Hee Beom Kim and Kevin Shimomura, 5 and 4.
The tournament ends today at Mid-Pacific.
The Challenge Cup is considered one of the most prestigious team competitions between Hawai'i pros and amateurs. Each team has 12 players competing in a Ryder Cup format.

Nakashima to Idaho: Kelly Nakashima, a senior from Baldwin High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play golf for the University of Idaho women's team next year.
Nakashima finished 15th in the David S. Ishii/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association championship in May. She was also a member of Team Hawai'i for the Junior America's Cup.
BASKETBALL
BYUH wins: Shawn Opunui scored 32 points and Austin Smylie had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 89-66 college men's victory over host San Francisco State last night.
BYUH is 2-1, San Francisco State is 0-2.
The Seasiders shot (30 for 52) 58 percent to the Gators' 44 percent (27 for 61). BYUH also led in rebounds, 27-25.
WRESTING
Clinic at Moanalua: Wrestlers from Lehigh University and Oregon State will be conducting a clinic on Friday at Moanalua High School gym.
The clinic will follow a dual meet between the universities that starts at noon.
There is no admission charge for the meet or clinic.
