THE LEFT LANE
Benefit ornament

Advertiser Staff and News Services

"Honolulu City Lights," the city's annual Christmas display, will release its fourth consecutive signature Christmas ornament this year.

"The Bear Band" features four whimsical bears (three playing instruments, one conducting, all in front of the city Christmas tree at City Hall). They will be available this weekend: at the Islandwide Crafts & Food Expo, Friday through Sunday at Blaisdell Center; and at Mission Houses Holiday Craft Fair, Saturday and Sunday.

The metal ornament is $15. The sales are supported by the Friends of Honolulu City Lights, and proceeds benefit the downtown Christmas display, which launches Dec. 6.

Earlier collectible ornaments from the past three years will also be available. The 2003 ornament also is available at Macy's stores on O'ahu, Borders at Ward Centre and Waikele Shopping Center, and at the City Store at Ala Moana Center. Or see honolulucitylights.org.

Thankful for diversity

Tonight, on Thanksgiving eve, religious communities in Nu'uanu Valley join for expressions of gratitude at the 42nd annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service.

Organizers say it's the oldest interfaith observance in Hawai'i.

Among the congregations and choirs on hand will be Methodists, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, Unitarians, Episcopalians, Jews and members of the United Church of Christ, offering symbols, songs of thanksgiving and centerpieces.

The service takes place at 7 p.m. at the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway, and this year's theme is "Hope for the Future."

Cold snow, warm cause

The forecast is "snow" — about 30 tons of it — when a snowman-building contest is held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center.

Radio station Island 98.5 FM is staging a benefit for Toys for Tots, and man-made snow is being hauled to the shopping center for the contest, which is part of the day's events.

Santa will be on hand for free photos with the kids; there also will be food booths and a craft fair. Those who bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots will get a chance to pull the Island 98.5 "jackpot machine" and get a chance to win a 2003 Dodge Dakota truck. Information: 550-9242.
