• "Elephant": A sad, implacable movie inspired by the Columbine tragedy. Winner of the Golden Palm at Cannes 2003. Opens today at The Art House at Restaurant Row. (R)

• "Shattered Glass": Stephen Glass was charming and self-deprecating and kept everybody entertained with his pitches at the weekly story conferences at The New Republic, but there was a problem: 27 of his stories were complete fiction. Opens today at The Art House at Restaurant Row. (PG-13)

• "Bad Santa": A dark comedy starring Billy Bob Thornton as a foul-mouthed, unkempt, drunken Santa. Opens today at Dole Cannery 18 Theatres, Pearl Highlands 12, Windward Stadium 10, Prince Kuhio Stadium Cinemas (Big Island), Makalapua Cinemas (Big Island), Lahaina Cinemas (Maui). (R)

• "The Haunted Mansion": Based on the Disney amusement-park attraction, this comedy stars Eddie Murphy as a real-estate agent who takes his family on a vacation that includes a detour to a haunted mansion. • "The Missing": When Indians kidnap her daughter, frontier doctor Cate Blanchett strikes a truce with her hated father (Tommy Lee Jones), and together with her younger daughter they track down the evil band.
