Kimball earns volleyball honors

Loyola Marymount senior outside hitter Kealani Kimball was named to the West Coast Conference first team for the third year in a row.

Kimball, a 2000 Kamehameha Schools graduate from Kaunakakai, Moloka'i, led the Lions to a 25-6 overall and 10-4 WCC record, and a ranking as high as No. 13.

She tops LMU in kills per game (4.23) and digs per game (3.49).

More Volleyball

• Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) senior libero Kacy Nekoba (Iolani of 'Aiea) was named to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team.

Redlands junior setter Courtney Cho (Kamehameha '01 of 'Aiea) was named to the second team.

• Three Hawai'i players from Taft College (Calif. JC) — sophomore outside hitter Jamie Tsubaki (Kaimuki '02), freshman setter Lehua Yap (Nanakuli) and freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Janice Fonoti (Farrington) — were named to the all-Central Valley Conference first team.

Sophomore libero Burgandi Borges (Roosevelt '02) and freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Kristelle Marfil (Farrington) were named to the second team.

Taft coach Kanoe Bandy, who has family from Hawai'i, was named the CVC Coach of the Year and Region Coach of the Year.

• Stanford junior libero Leahi Hall (King Kekaulike '00 of Ha'iku) earned honorable mention Pac-10 Conference All-Academic Honors.

• Menlo College sophomore setter Kari Shimomura (McKinley '02 of Honolulu) was named to the California Pacific All-Conference second team.

Menlo College freshman Sanoe Eselu (Moanalua '03 of Waipahu) was an honorable-mention selection.



Women's Soccer

• Brigham Young is in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championships for the first time in the program's nine-year history.

Sophomore defender Charlene Lui (Punahou '02 of Wai'alae Iki) has started all 25 games for the Cougars. She is the only player from Hawai'i still in the tournament.

BYU plays Connecticut Saturday.

• Harvard sophomore midfielder Maile Tavepholjalern (attended Punahou) was an Ivy League honorable-mention selection.



Men's Soccer

• Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara, each with two players from Hawai'i, will meet in the second round of the NCAA Men's Division I Soccer Tournament today.

LMU senior Adam Sthay (Punahou '99 of Honolulu) has started four of five games he has played in, and Darin Fajota (Maryknoll '02 of Honolulu) has played in one game this season.

Santa Clara's Chad Imhoff-Sils (Kamehameha '03 of 'Aiea) is redshirting this season and redshirt freshman Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula) suffered a leg injury in October and has not played since. He had started seven of 15 games he played, scoring three goals.

Santa Clara defeated Southern Methodist when the teams played to a 1-1 tie, but the Broncos won on penalty kicks, 4-1, Friday to advance to the second round.

SMU's Duke Hashimoto (Iolani '01 of Kapolei) had an assist in the loss.

• Pacific junior forward Bobby Shinn (Pearl City '01 of Waipahu) was named all-Northwest Conference honorable mention after scoring six goals and four assists.



Swimming

• University of San Diego sophomore Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02 of Honolulu) won three events in the Speedo Cup in Long Beach, Calif., last weekend.

She set a school record in the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 53.15 seconds, breaking her own record of 4:53.69.

She also won the 400 IM in 4:17:06 and the 1650 freestyle in 16:51.84.

In the preliminaries, she broke another of her school records in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.26 (2:16.63).

All were NCAA qualifying times.

• Stanford freshman Hongzhe Sun (Iolani '03 of 'Ewa Beach) placed second in the 100 backstroke (48.73), third in the 200 IM (1:49.44) and third in the 200 backstroke (1:45.57) at the Speedo Cup.Ê



Wrestling

Cornell junior Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu) defeated Michael Messina of Sacred Hearts, 8-4, in the final of the 133-pound weight class at the Cornell Body Bar Open.

Lee is the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 133 pounds.Ê

• Iowa State sophomore Grant Nakamura (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku) finished second in the UNO Kaufman Open, losing 10-9 by a tie breaker in overtime to Luke Eustice of Iowa at 125 pounds.

• Harvard freshman Jonathan Spiker (Saint Louis '03) placed sixth at the East Stroudsburg Open, losing to Jeremy Hart of Penn State, 11-3, in the medal match at 165 pounds. Spiker is currently competing at a higher weight class. When the regular season begins, he will wrestle at 157.
