Advertiser Staff
The 34th Maui Marathon announced that it will conduct a half-marathon on the same day Sept. 19, 2004 but in different towns.
The inaugural Maui Half Marathon will be limited to 1,000 runners and is expected to sell out months in advance. "We have received requests for a half marathon for years and we are confident that the event will be a huge success," said Bob Craver, race director.
As in past years, the 26.2-mile marathon course will start in Kahului and finish in Ka'anapali at Whalers Village. The 13.1-mile half marathon will sport an out-and-back course that will start near the marathon's Ka'anapali finish line and run through Lahaina before the 6.5-mile turnaround point. Both races will utilize the same finish line.

AUTO RACING
Sprint to the finish: Arizona's Ronnie Clark and Hawai'i's Dean Freitas recorded feature victories in the inaugural Hawaiian USAC Southwest Sprint Car Classic at Hawai'i Motor Speedway on Nov. 14 and 16.
The Nov. 16 racing was required when rains forced postponement of scheduled events the day before.
The two races marked USAC's debut in Hawai'i and featured stars of USAC's Southwest Sprint Car Series and Hawai'i dirt-track sprint car regulars.
Clark, of Tucson, Ariz., won the 30-lap race on the ¥-mile dirt track located in 'Ewa Beach. He took the lead on lap 25 when Southwest Sprint Car Champion Rick Ziehl tangled with David Burns. Trailing Clark at the checkered flag were Brandon Lane, Mike Martin, Albert Ternora, Jr. and Mike Boat.
Freitas, of Kapolei, also caught Ziehl on the 20th lap of the 40-lap race and led the rest of the way to beat Ziehl, Clark, Lane and Bruce St. James.
Ziehl posted the fastest qualifying time for both events. Ziehl, Lane and Freitas won Nov. 14 heats, while Freitas won the Nov. 14 dash and Clark won the Nov. 16 dash.
