Nimitz crash victim identified

A 25-year-old motorcyclist who died at Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi after a crash Friday on North Nimitz Highway has been identified by the medical examiner's office as Apollo Starnes of Pearl City.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said Starnes lost control on a turn and crashed into a concrete barrier almost a mile west of Valkenburgh Street at 1:30 p.m. Speed appears to be a contributing factor, police said. Starnes was wearing a helmet.

Starnes is O'ahu's 74th traffic fatality of the year, after a change in the count.

The Nov. 5 death of Mark K. Valdez has been reclassified as a nontraffic incident based on autopsy findings. And the Nov. 15 death of a 78-year-old motorist on the H-1 Freeway near University Avenue also will be reclassified when police receive official notification of an autopsy, which determined the man died of heart failure.

Hawai'i Kai parade Saturday

The annual Hawai'i Kai Christmas Parade will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday along Lunalilo Home Road.

The parade, sponsored by Koko Marina Center and the Hawai'i Kai Lions Club, will begin at the corner of Hawai'i Kai Drive and Lunalilo Home Road and end at the shopping center.

Lunalilo Home Road will be closed to traffic leaving Hawai'i Kai during the parade, which will travel along the townbound side of the road, now divided by a median strip.

About 1,000 people are to take part in the parade, including five bands — one coming from Arkansas and the Royal Hawaiian Band. There will be antique cars, scouts, cheerleaders and area legislators.
