Auction of sports items to help youths

Advertiser Staff

Several autographed sports memorabilia will be auctioned at an Adult Friends for Youth fund-raiser tomorrow at the Sheraton Waikiki, Hawai'i Ballroom.

The dinner and auction, entitled "Celebration for Youth," starts at 4:45 p.m. and will feature numerous auction items, including an autographed hockey stick by Wayne Gretzky, an autographed Denver Broncos football and a basketball signed by Magic Johnson.

A silent auction will be held from 4:45 to 7 p.m. with about 1,100 items, and a live auction with sports memorabilia will be held following the Frank DeLima show, said Sid Rosen, the director of the Adult Friends for Youth.

The Adult Friends for Youth is a private, non-profit agency that provides a therapeutic rehabilitation service for high-risk youth, Rosen said. The annual fund-raiser is anticipated to raise about $320,000 for the agency, Rosen said.

The program will also honor Mario Fatafehi, Louie Caday and Brad Myers. Both Fatafehi, a Denver Broncos defensive lineman, and Caday, an Waipahu auto mechanic, have become successful role models after gang-filled teenage years in Hawai'i. Myers is the outgoing president of Adult Friends for Youth and is the the senior vice president for Kapolei Property Development, which is part of the Estate of James Campbell.

Costs range from $1,000 to $3,500 for a table of 10. The $3,500 table will include executive chefs who will prepare a multi-course meal, Rosen said. For more information or reservations, call 833-8775 or 779-4317.
