Witnesses to gather here
Advertiser Staff
About 30,000 people from 12 countries are expected to gather at the Jehovah's Witnesses international conventions here next month. That includes about 8,000 from the Mainland and about 10,000 to 12,000 from Hawai'i attending the conventions, which are on consecutive weekends in December, said Eric Anderson, spokesman for the conventions.
"We originally planned for one, but response was so great we had to add a second weekend," he said.
The group will meet Dec. 18 to 21 at the Hawai'i Convention Center and Dec. 25 to 28 at the entire Neal Blaisdell Center complex for the denomination's first international conventions in Hawai'i since 1978.
"It's a big deal for us, with delegates coming from all over the world," Anderson said.
Programs include Bible-based discussions, testimonies, dramatizations of scriptural stories and baptisms.
Jehovah's Witnesses consider the convention to be a highlight of their year, but these gatherings are not just for members of the faith, said Anderson. Last year, almost a third of those at conventions were not Jehovah's Witnesses.
