Kahuku, Saint Louis win

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kahuku running back Darren Magalogo dives for the end zone as Farrington's Presley Tagaloa and Jerome Crisostomo try to bring him down. Magalogo's 19-yard TD run led and a two-point conversion gave Kahuku a 15-7 lead.

Recovering from yet another shaky start last night, the Kahuku High School football team is back in the First Hawaiian Bank State Championship game after rallying past Farrington, 35-7, in semifinal action at Aloha Stadium.

The Red Raiders (13-0) will play the winner of last night's late game between Baldwin (10-1) and Saint Louis (8-1) for the title on Dec. 5.

Kahuku, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide poll of coaches and media, will be making its fourth state final appearance in the tournament's five-year history after failing to qualify last season.

"I was on the team that won states two years ago, and I remember we were in this same locker room," said Red Raiders defensive back Tori Taulogo, who made an interception and returned a punt for a touchdown last night. "It feels great to get back here again."

To do it, Kahuku had to overcome nine fumbles, including three that were lost in the first half. Farrington (7-5-1) converted the first fumble recovery into a touchdown pass from receiver Alvin Faumui to running back Matt Bell for a 7-0 lead with 8:30 remaining in the first quarter.

The Red Raiders answered with Dustin Huddy's 3-yard touchdown run, and took a 15-7 lead with 5:30 left in the second quarter after Darren Magalolo's 19-yard TD run and Huddy's two-point conversion run. But that's how the score remained at halftime, despite Kahuku out-gaining the Governors, 238 yards to 77.

In their previous two first halves, the Red Raiders were tied 0-0 against Kailua, and led Kaua'i 7-3.

"We always talk about the turnovers, about trying to get a good game from the start and not making mistakes," Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said. "But our defense kept us in it again, they kept giving us the ball."

The turnovers did not stop in the second half, as Farrington's Presley Tagaloa intercepted a pass on his own 10-yard line to kill the Red Raiders' first drive.

But Kahuku came up with another three-and-out on defense, and the offense answered with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Waika Carvalho to tight end Tevita Finau. After another three-and-out by the Govs, Toriago returned a punt 43 yards for a touchdown to make it 29-7 with 3:05 left in the third quarter.

"That hurt us," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "It kind of took the air out of the game."

The Red Raiders sealed it with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Kurtney Silva to Spencer Hafoka with 2:14 left.

"Everybody was frustrated in the first half, but our coaches told us to just drop everything and start the second half at 0-0, and just go out and play hard," Carvalho said. "The team gets frustrated, because it's like when the running backs do good, the line plays bad, and when the line does good, the running backs play bad. But the coaches just calmed us down, and they told us to just cut down on our mistakes and play Kahuku football."

Carvalho finished with 10 completions in 17 attempts for 195 yards, and 10 Kahuku rushers combined for 277 yards. Farrington, meanwhile, was limited to 127 yards, including only 60 on 17 carries by Bell, who got 27 yards on a fake punt. Governors quarterback Eti Atonio, who completed 11 of 15 passes for 179 yards against Hilo last week, finished 6 of 16 for 75 yards with two interceptions. He was knocked out of the game briefly after his first completion.

Farrington also lost starting defensive lineman Josaiah Milo for the game when he was injured in the first quarter.

"Eti got his bell rung, and it affected him a little, but their pass rush affected us, too," Okimoto said. "(Milo) was a big loss, we needed him in there. But Kahuku just played a helluva game."
