A Koloa man died Thursday after falling while hunting, Kaua'i authorities said yesterday.

Anthony Balocan, an employee in the Kaua'i County Department of Public Works, fell nearly 1,000 feet while on a hunting expedition in Koke'e.

Balocan's body was recovered by Fire Department rescuers from the 2nd Battalion, assisted by Air One from Inter Island Helicopters.

Fire Rescue Specialist Tim Stokesbary said Balocan, who had suffered a massive head injury, was dead by the time the rescuers reached him.

"We will miss Tony," Deputy County Engineer Ladye Martin said. "His 21 years of service to the County of Kaua'i is greatly appreciated. Our sympathies and condolences go out to his family."
