Lanes closed for roadwork

Traffic lanes will be closed at the intersection of Iroquois Point Road and Keaunui Drive in 'Ewa Tuesday through Friday while work crews create a four-way stop after several incidents in which pedestrians were nearly hit by cars at the spot, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Students from nearby Holomua Elementary School use crosswalks at the intersection to get to and from school.

Lane closures and roadwork will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

A stoplight will be installed at the intersection in 2005 by Gentry Homes as a requirement of its planned development.

DLNR chairman to head panel

Peter Young, chairman of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, has been named chairman of the Coastal States Organization's Island Affairs Committee.

The purpose of the association is to shape a national agenda for the protection of coastal and ocean resources.

Young's duties will include coordinating and supporting the specific management and information needs and concerns of island members. Hawai'i has 750 miles of coastline and 410,000 acres of coral reefs.

"In our islands, just about anything we do affects our coastal resources," Young said. "Some of the key benefits ... are that we can exchange management information and mutually support activities which sustain our coral reef ecosystems and other coastal resources. We can also work together to address issues of shoreline modification, natural hazards, polluted runoff, and be informed and proactive on matters at the regional and local level that impact coastal states."

The parade will culminate with the annual lighting of the Kaimuki Christmas Tree in a park near the fire station.

Verizon will provide cash prizes to Maui County schools whose students collect the most old telephone books for recycling.

The three schools that gather the most books will win prizes of $500, $200 and $100. Verizon will also provide $250 for the school that brings back the most books on Moloka'i, and another $250 if a school on Lana'i collects more than 600 books.

The 2003-2004 Verizon phone books were sent out to Maui this month. The student contest is from Thursday to Dec. 13.
