Menlo College's Shimomura honored

Menlo College (Calif.) sophomore Kari Shimomura was named California Pacific Conference Player of the Week for women's volleyball yesterday.

Shimomura, a 2002 McKinley High School graduate, led Menlo (5-4) to two victories over the weekend.

She had 10 kills, 24 digs and five aces in a victory over Dominican, and eight kills and eight digs in a victory over Mills College.



Soccer

• Linfield junior Colby Ayonon (Kapa'a '01) scored in the 67th minute in a 3-0 win over Pacific (Ore.) Sunday in men's soccer action.

Also, Linfield's Cherish Kaaa (University High '97 of Kapolei) is in her third year as an assistant coach with the women's team. ... West Florida senior Trebor Hartley (Waiakea of Kea'au) scored in a 4-3 overtime win against Alabama-Huntsville. ... Harvard senior Alisa Sato (Iolani '00 of Mililani) scored a goal and had an assist in a 2-1 win over Penn. The win snapped Penn's 10-game Ivy League win streak. ... Fresno State senior Erin Sayegusa (Kaiser '00 of Hawai'i Kai) scored in a 6-1 loss to Southern Methodist Sunday.



FOOTBALL

• Teo Bennett, an Iolani School graduate from Kapolei, scored on a 13-yard reception as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges beat Colorado Colleges, 34-27, Saturday.

The sophomore running back had eight rushes for 19 yards and three catches for 65 yards.

Junior running back D.A. Weick (Punahou of Honolulu), senior offensive lineman Clayton Schroers (Iolani of Honolulu) and freshman wide receiver Tonee Suetsugu (Iolani of Honolulu) also play for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Junior defensive lineman Ryan Markham (Punahou '01 of Kailua) plays for Colorado Colleges.

MACDONALD
• Oregon senior Eri Macdonald (Punahou '99 of Honolulu) placed fifth in 17 minutes, 22 seconds in the 5K Sundodger Invitational Saturday.

Portland State junior Annie Kawasaki (St. Francis '01 of Honolulu) finished 41st in 18:42.

San Diego State sophomore Christal Cuadra (Maryknoll '02 of Honolulu) placed 36th in 22:32 in the Stanford Invitational Saturday. Cuadra finished 18th in 14:47 in the 4K Hawai'i Big Wave Invitational at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course Sept. 20.



Tennis

• Cleveland State freshman Sarah Galon (Leilehua '03 of Wai'anae) won at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3, and doubles, 8-3, against UW-Green Bay.
