Charges pending in cab robberies

Charges are pending against a 25-year-old Kewalo Street man in connection with recent armed robberies of cab drivers. Police arrested the man yesterday at 2:55 p.m. on suspicion of robbing cab drivers at knifepoint on Sept. 19 and Sept. 21.

The man is also suspected of a third robbery on Sept. 13.

A knife was used in the three robberies.

In the Sept. 21 robbery, a 38-year-old cab driver was stabbed with a small knife.

Man-of-war raid swimming areas

Several days of kona winds have blown Portuguese man-of-war toward south-facing O'ahu shores with painful consequences for beachgoers, Honolulu lifeguards said.

The south-to-southwest winds yesterday blew hundreds of man-of-war into the popular swimming area of Ala Moana Beach, chasing swimmers out of the water, lifeguards said today.

But despite the huge numbers, only eight people were treated for stings at Ala Moana and at Waikiki Beach.

Similar conditions forced water safety officials last week to close Hanauma Bay after 30 people were stung in an hour.

Beachgoers are advised that any beach that has steady onshore winds may be affected by Portuguese man-of-war. If stung, people should flush the area of the wound with clean saltwater.

For severe toxic reaction, which may include symptoms such as difficulty breathing, cramping or nausea, seek medical attention.
