Gov. Linda Lingle named a new committee yesterday to generate grassroots public support for her education reform plans. Over the next year, committee members will push the state Legislature to put a local school boards question on the November 2004 ballot and approve reform legislation.
Members of the Citizens to Achieve Reform in Education committee are:
Marc Benihoff, CEO of Salesforce.com; Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert R. Dierker, deputy commander, U.S. Pacific Command; Eddie Flores, president of the L&L Drive-in Restaurant chain; Mel Hanohano, teacher at Kailua Elementary School; David Heenan, trustee of the Campbell Estate.
Tareq Hoque, CEO of Landmark Enterprises; Stan Kawaguchi, manager of the Pacific area for Parsons Brinckerhoff (committee chairman); Georgina Kawamura, director, state Department of Budget and Finance; Maryanne Kusaka, former mayor of Kaua'i; Rod McPhee, former president of Punahou School.
April Nakamura, teacher at McKinley High School; Mike O'Neill, CEO of Bank of Hawaii; Diana Oshiro, charter school principal, former senior administrator in the Department of Education; Mary Ann Raywid, education professor at the University of Hawai'i.
Madge Schaefer, Maui community activist; Roger Takabayashi, president, Hawai'i State Teachers Association; Rose Tseng, chancellor, UH-Hilo; Laura Thielen, member of the state Board of Education; Lynn Watanabe, member of P20 Council, co-founder of America's Promise Hawaii; Sue Wesselkamper, president, Chaminade University.
Jon Znamierowski, principal, Waimea Middle School; Gene Zarro, board member of Kihei Charter School; and William Ouchi, professor in corporate renewal, Anderson Graduate School of Management, UCLA (committee consultant).
Correction: Mel Hanohano, a teacher at Kailua Elementary School, will serve on the governor's Citizens to Achieve Reform in Education committee. The name of the school was incorrect in a Local News story posted on Thursday.
