THE LEFT LANE
The lei we were: a book-signing party

Advertiser Staff and News Services

For the new book "Na Lei Makamae" (UH Press, $49.95), living Hawaiian treasures Marie A. McDonald of Waimea and Paul Weissich of Hono-lulu spent nearly a decade researching historic documents and oral tradition to try to re-create pre-Western-contact native lei.

McDonald, a lei-maker, crafted dozens of lei, many of which were photographed by Jean Cote. The history and photos of the lei flowers and plants are also accompanied by poetic mele composed by kumu hula and writer Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele.

"Na Lei Makamae" (meaning "cherished lei" or "lei that will last forever") is available at Native Books & Beautiful Things stores. The project will be celebrated with a free reception and book-signing noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cook's Discoveries shop in Waimea. Details: (808) 937-2833.
